From Little Things, Big Things Grow

By Kathy Park

From the humble covered sport shelter to the magnificent Benedictine Place, St Margaret Mary’s College delighted in the official Opening and Blessing of our brand-new facilities on Thursday 2 June.

The community came together to witness the Apostolic Nuncio in Australia, Archbishop Charles Balvo and Bishop of Townsville, Timothy Harris and Parish Priest Father Joshy John lead us in prayer and thanksgiving.

Beginning with the traditional Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by the Wulgurukaba Walkabouts, the liturgy included the melodious voices of Bella Voce singing our new sacred school song “Listen with the Ear of the Heart” as well as other beautiful hymns.

The College was very pleased to welcome many special guests to the liturgy, including representatives from i4Architecure and Simon Bell Construction who created such beautiful buildings, representatives from Townsville Catholic Education, several Sisters of the Good Samaritan and the Mayor of Townsville, Cr Jenny Hill. Of course, the students and staff were there to share with each other the sense of gratitude and appreciation that our College has grown so much over the years.

Archbishop Balvo spoke to those assembled of the importance of community and connection. The College is most appreciative that the visit by the Nuncio coincided with this auspicious event.

College Principal, Kathy Park, paid tribute to St Benedict and the founding sisters of the primary and secondary school for girls, the Sisters of the Good Samaritan of the Order of St Benedict. Their wisdom, love and sheer hard work laid the foundation for this vibrant learning community that continues to thrive in Hyde Park.

“In all things may God be glorified” – and indeed all at St Margaret Mary’s College strive to that each and every ordinary day.
