Southern Cross Catholic College (SCCC) has been a prolific figure in the Townsville Catholic Education diocese since its grand opening in 1998. Originally a primary school, SCCC has since expanded to P-12 and is home to over 1450 bright eyed students.

On paper, SCCC might appear like your average school, offering diverse subject selections for the modern learner, but there is one subject in particular that has got tongues wagging, literally.

SCCC boasts a state-of-the art media program that provides students from Years 6-12 with tactile learning experiences using the latest in audiovisual equipment and programming. Not only can students participate in media as an elective Australian Curriculum derived subject but at SCCC, they are also granted opportunities to work both inside and outside the school community to create authentic media content. This includes, live streaming events, photographing and filming school-based events, internal school TV programs (On the Couch and Off the Couch) and, their latest endeavour, podcasts.

At the helm of the department is Ben Penna who has 30+ years of real-world experience in music and media, in addition to his time as a teacher. Since 2016, Penna has fostered a learning environment that engages students and develops both their critical and creative thinking. Whether it is generating awareness for endangered animals in a TV News Report, celebrating an unsung hero in a documentary or busting a move in a music video, students have plenty of chances to flex their interests and skills.

This year, Penna has been joined by former radio announcer turned secondary teacher, Courtney Dibben. Together the pair have created Teachers Talking Tips, a weekly podcast that goes behind the scenes of the classroom and uncovers the treasure trove of advice real teachers have to offer. This podcast has been a hit at SCCC and there are plans to expand the guest list to include teachers from all across the Townsville Catholic Education diocese.

With a new, purpose-built, media room due to open later this year there is no telling where the media department, or the students enrolled in it, will go. First stop SCCC, next the Academy Awards.
