Aligning technology to strengthen the learing environments of our students

The ICT department of Townsville Catholic Education provide services to all Catholic schools in the Diocese, to support them in achieving quality outcomes for students and in promoting the ongoing development of Catholic education.

Providing a rich E-Learning environment. Technology makes it possible to make every classroom a resource rich environment. MyInternet is an E_learning portal that delivers: email to all students and staff; an extranet to collect files and resources from home and a standard web and mail filter across the diocese. It also provides a range of subscriptions including: Atomic Learning; Britannica; Webster World; and the Learning Federation learning objects. It gives staff and students a rich array of resources at their fingertips and available from anywhere and at anytime.

Access To Devices
In 2008, all primary teachers were supplied with a mobile device that is connected to the internet and the Diocesan Wide Area Network. By 2010, all students from Years 9-12 will be supplied with a 'connected' device so they can actively participate in the Digital Revolution.

Data Projectors in all classrooms. If teachers are to embed ICTs, they need tools that are readily available. This strategy places a mounted data projector in every primary classroom in the diocese.

The Data Jug. This is a collaboration and communication framework. It includes day-to-day administrative functions like attendance, behaviour profiling and reporting; collaboration functions such as sharing units and digital content across the Diocese and communication functions such as a Diocesan White Pages.

ICT-Ryan Catholic College seniorA Unit Planning Tool. Good teaching stems from good planning. Teachers in the Townsville diocese have an electronic planning tool that ensures attention is given to all aspects of good pedagogy during the planning process. These aspects include:

  • Syllabus requirements;
  • The Roles Of The Life long Learner
  • 7 focus areas: PDE; values; First-Steps; Gifted & Talented; ICT; Partnerships and Inclusivity.

TekNet . Teknet recognises that as schools have an increasing dependence on computers and other ICT devices, they need ICT support. To deal with this need, all primary schools have centralised support delivered by TCEO. Furthermore, many schools are employing trainees (completing their certificate III in ICT) who work closely with TCEO technicians to solve school ICT issues. Secondary schools tend to employ dedicated ICT support staff.

The CENet Wide Are Network (WAN). This guarantees that student participation in the Digital Revolution is filtered and monitored and offered within a closed private network.
