Five Catholic schools service the Herbert River district , which is located 110km north of Townsville. The main town of Ingham has a population of 5000, and 12 000 live in the greater shire. Sugar is the major industry of this northern area of the Diocese. The town of Ingham is renowned for its multicultural population, stemming from post-war migration and the establishment of the sugar industry. Today more than half of the town is of Italian descent. Ingham is surrounded by the smaller towns of Halifax and Trebonne and further west, Abergowrie. In Ingham, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School and Gilroy Santa Maria College serve the local community. Two smaller Catholic primary schools support the surrounding townships - Canossa School in Trebonne and St Peter’s School in Halifax. St Teresa's, a secondary boys' boarding college, is located in Abergowrie, approximately 30 minutes drive west of Ingham.
