INTRODUCTION

St Michael's School is situated on Palm island which is about 55 kilometres from Townsville. The school was established in 1938 by the Sisters of Our Lady Help of Christians. The original school was situated on the present airport site, about two kilometres from the actual settlement. In 1945 the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Sisters took charge of the education of the children and this Order of Sisters remains a presence on the island to this day. In 2008 there are approximately 144 students at the school, which has in recent years undergone an extensive building program.
