The Great Barrier Reef is an important part of the Australian national identity, a global environmental icon, and a key part of the cultural identity of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (the Authority) is responsible for the management of Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (Marine Park). Through transformative agile management, the Authority ensures the ecologically sustainable use and benefits of the Marine Park continue for current and future generations. The Authority acknowledges the continuing sea country management and custodianship of the Great Barrier Reef by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traditional Owners whose rich cultures, heritage values, enduring connections and shared efforts protect the Reef for future generations. The Authority’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Strategy for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park focuses on keeping Indigenous heritage strong, safe and healthy.
