Each delegate will receive a polo shirt as part of their registration (order form is included in registration process). Please note, sizing can not be guaranteed for registrations placed after 6 September.

THE TWO TREES

This specific drawing represents both courage and wisdom and tells a story of how we can all drive change. It symbolises the change in which not only the trees go through, but we as a society go through also.

The biggest tree represents the wisdom of our Elders, of our history, and of our communities. This tree has seen a lot of change as it grew and adapted to each phase of life. Surviving harsh climates of flood, fire and drought, it has gained knowledge and protects those under its care. It shelters and provides shade (wisdom) for others camped at or growing at its base.

 The smaller tree portrays the courage of our people. As it gets older and grows, it will need to grow and adapt, and be courageous enough to be different. We know that this tree will have to weather the same challenges and provide the firewood that keeps our people going. Blue water sustain the roots, filling the soil with knowledge, wisdom, and courage that both the trees need to grow.

 Altogether, the picture tell a story of our culture, history, and of future generations. We develop wisdom at school and at home, in our every interaction with friends and family. We foster courage when we challenge stereotypes and question ideas that hold us back. With our combined strengths, these trees will grow to shelter our Elders past, present, and emerging.

 Brianna Cassady is of Aboriginal & South Sea Islander heritage.  Brianna’s mob is the Nywaigi people from the Halifax/Ingham region.  Nywaigi country extends from the mouth of the Herbert River, south to the north bank of Rollingstone Creek; West to Mt Spec area and out to Manbarra-Palm Island.   

The primary purpose of collecting this information is to enable us to inform you about our Indigenous Education Conference to be held in October 2019.
