Parent Engagement Policy

STATEMENT OF POLICY

We will engage with parents in Catholic Schools based on the gospel values of respect, integrity, equity, transparency, love and service.

 INTRODUCTION

Parent engagement in schools is a shared responsibility in which schools and other community agencies and organisations are committed to reaching out to engage parents in meaningful ways, and parents are committed to actively supporting their children’s and adolescents’ learning and development.1 Parents play a primary role in supporting their children’s wellbeing and learning, guiding and supporting their children successfully through educational processes. Students achieve better outcomes from their education when schools, families and the community work together to support student learning.

 RATIONALE

The education of children was addressed by Pope Francis: The Synod wanted to emphasise the importance of Catholic schools which ‘play a vital role in assisting parents in their duty to raise their children. Catholic schools should be encouraged in their mission to help pupils grow into mature adults who can view the world with the love of Jesus and who can understand life as a call to serve God.2

 At Townsville Catholic Education, we recognise and encourage the right of families to engage with their child’s learning. We recognised that partnerships between parents and carers, communities and schools promote student learning and high expectations for student success.

 POLICY DIRECTIVE

Each school in the Diocese will promote a high level of parent engagement, by ensuring:

  1. Communication with parents is an effective exchange, involving information sharing and opportunities to learn about each other. Procedures are in place to facilitate formal reporting and feedback to parents regarding their child’s progress, as well as pathways for parents to effectively and respectfully communicate with the school to enhance engagement.
  2. Parents are actively welcomed into the school community by school leaders, staff and the parent body.
  3. Parent participation in student learning and the school community is acknowledged and valued.
  4. Parents are encouraged to be engaged in and contribute to School Boards, Parents & Friends Associations and Catholic school activities.
  5. Parents are encouraged to be involved in the development of Catholic school policies and procedures, through the school board.
  6. Parents have the opportunity to be informed about aspects of the Catholic school curriculum programs, including the Religion Curriculum.
  7. Parents have opportunities for assistance and support in the areas of faith, personal growth and effective parenting.
  8. Parents are invited and encouraged to participate in all social and pastoral events within the school community.

 Schools will develop strategies in collaboration with leadership teams, school boards and School P&C Association to practically enact these directives.

 REFERENCES AND DEFINITION

This policy applies to all Catholic Schools and Colleges, Kindergartens, OHSC and Early Learning Centres of the Townsville Diocese, and the Townsville Catholic Education Office.

Parents refers to parents / guardians / caregivers or person’s in whose care our students are entrusted.
