What does the new Year 11 and 12 assessment mean for your child? 

St Margaret Mary’s College is one of many secondary schools in Queensland who have been working with parents, students and staff to get ready for the new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) system.

What does is mean for our students?

The introduction of the new QCE system is the most significant change to senior curriculum and assessment in Queensland since the early 70s.

The new system aims to improve the QCE, giving students more opportunities for success by preparing our young people for the 21st century work, training and learning opportunities.

Subject results will be based on a student’s achievement in three school-based assessments and one external assessment. These are set and marked by trained Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority assessors. Students will recieve an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) score, replacing the OP (Overall Position) system.

What exactly is the difference between the OP and ATAR?

The ATAR is a “finer-grained” rank order of students, more specific than the OP, and is commonly used in other states and territories. It is a number up to 99.95 with increments of 0.05, whereas the OP consists of 25 bands.

The new senior assessment system will start with students who entered Year 11 this year, and the first students to receive an ATAR instead of an OP will graduate from Year 12 in 2020.

Why the change?

The system is underpinned by:

  • New and redeveloped senior syllabuses
  • Processes that strengthen the quality and comparability of school-based assessment
  • External assessment in General subjects (QCAA, October 2017)
