A Dream Realised at Mary Help of Christians Catholic College
What began as a vision for a new Catholic secondary school for Townsville's growing population has taken another significant step forward, with Bishop Tim Harris officially blessing and opening the Stage 1 facilities at Mary Help of Christians Catholic College.
Students, families, staff, project partners and invited guests gathered to celebrate the occasion and reflect on the collective effort that has transformed the dream of a new Catholic college into a thriving learning community.
Since welcoming its first cohort of students, the College has focused on creating a place where young people feel welcomed, valued and inspired to grow in faith, learning and purpose. Guided by the example of Mary Help of Christians, the school is building a culture centred on Christ, community and opportunity.
The newly blessed facilities provide students with contemporary spaces to learn, connect and grow. Stage 1 includes administration facilities, a library, flexible learning areas, a covered sports court, canteen and student gathering spaces, creating a welcoming environment that supports both learning and community.
As enrolments continue to grow, work is already underway on the next stage of development. Stage 2 will deliver specialist STEM learning environments, science laboratories, design and industrial technology workshops, additional classrooms and expanded parking. Expected to be completed in the middle of Term 1, 2027, the project will ensure the College continues to meet the needs of current and future students.
Principal Mardi Grubba said the blessing and opening of the facilities provided an opportunity to acknowledge the many people who have helped bring the vision for the College to life.
"The official opening and blessing of Stage 1 of the College Masterplan marks a time for us to pause and give thanks to every person and organisation who has contributed to the building of the first stage of the project in some way, little or large, making the dream of this wonderful college into a reality, to be witnessed and enjoyed by many for generations to come."
The celebration recognised the contributions of staff, families, educational leaders, architects, builders and supporters who shared a commitment to establishing a contemporary Catholic secondary school for the northern beaches community.
As the College continues to grow, the facilities stand as a visible reminder of what can be achieved through faith, vision and collaboration, while providing students with the foundation to learn, flourish and make a positive difference in the world.
Reflecting on both the journey so far and the future ahead, Mardi Grubba concluded:
"For all that has been given, for all that has been entrusted to us, and for all that the Holy Spirit is yet to guide us to do, we give thanks."
