Behind the Scenes of You + Me: A Southern Cross Story

Every so often, a school community produces something that reaches far beyond the classroom - something that captures its heart, its creativity, and its belief in young people. You + Me, a new short film written and co-directed by Southern Cross Catholic College teacher Courtney Dibben, is exactly that kind of project.

What began as a creative idea has grown into a powerful collaboration between staff, students, and local filmmaker, Ashley Caldwell. Even more inspiring is the dedication shown by Southern Cross students, many of whom volunteered their school holidays to work on set. From slate operators to runners, script supervisors, to behind-the-scenes support, they stepped into real industry roles with enthusiasm and professionalism. Their commitment reflects the strong culture of learning, service, and curiosity that defines the College.

At its core, You + Me follows the emotional journey of a young woman discovering her own self-worth and learning to navigate her coping mechanisms. It’s a story that resonates deeply with a contemporary audience -  honest, vulnerable and ultimately hopeful. Courtney’s vision brings these themes to life with sensitivity, while the student involvement adds authenticity and heart.

The film isn’t just a creative achievement; it’s a resource with purpose. You + Me will become part of future teaching materials at Southern Cross Catholic College, offering students a relatable way to explore wellbeing, resilience, and self-understanding. For those studying Media Arts and Media Arts in Practice, it offers a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse at the production process that will guide their own unique creations. It’s art with impact and a testament to what can happen when a school community invests in storytelling.

You + Me is more than a short film. It’s a reminder of the power of collaboration, the courage of young people, and the creativity thriving within Southern Cross Catholic College. And for many of the students who stepped onto set for the first time, it may just be the beginning of their own storytelling journey.
