Celebrating culture through children's literature

For St Anthony's Catholic College School Officer Elliot Passi, storytelling has always been part of who he is.

Raised on stories passed down through generations of family, culture and Country, Elliot recently had the opportunity to help bring one of those stories to life as the illustrator and co-author of Geigi The Stubborn Boy, a children's picture book created alongside his father, Michael Passi.

The beautifully illustrated book shares a traditional Torres Strait Islander Creation story from Meriam Country, teaching readers about the importance of listening to Elders, the strength of family, and the cultural significance of stories that have been passed down for generations.

For Elliot, the project was much more than creating a children's book - it was an opportunity to preserve and share culture.

"Growing up, I loved reading Indigenous stories, but I rarely saw books that reflected Torres Strait Islander culture and experiences," Elliot said.

"Being able to create something that shares our stories and allows Torres Strait Islander children to see themselves represented is incredibly important. I hope young people can pick up this book and recognise their culture, their communities, or simply learn something new about the Torres Strait Islands."

The story itself has deep personal significance for the Passi family. Michael first heard the story from his grandparents, aunties and uncles while spending time on Mer Island, where the tale has been shared across generations.

Years later, he shared the story with his son.

Together, the pair combined Michael's cultural knowledge and traditional storytelling with Elliot's contemporary writing and illustration skills to create a book that honours the original story while making it accessible and engaging for young readers.

"My dad grew up hearing this story from family, and then he shared it with me," Elliot said.

"Working together on this project allowed us to continue that tradition of storytelling while finding a new way to share it with others. It was really special to collaborate with him and bring something to life that means so much to our family and community."

Using digital illustration software, Elliot created vibrant artwork that transports readers to the islands of Mer, Dauer and Waier, helping to bring the characters and landscapes of the Torres Strait to life.

The story follows Geigi, a curious and stubborn young boy who ignores his mother's warnings and ventures to places considered unsafe. Through his adventure, readers learn valuable lessons about respect, responsibility and listening to the wisdom of Elders.

The story also serves as a Creation story, explaining the origins of the Giant Trevally and Triggerfish, which can still be found in the waters surrounding the Torres Strait Islands today.

For Elliot, ensuring these stories continue to be shared is vital.

"Stories are such an important part of our culture. They're how knowledge, values and history are passed from one generation to the next," he said.

"Sharing stories like Geigi The Stubborn Boy helps keep those traditions alive while also giving people across Australia an opportunity to learn more about Torres Strait Islander culture."

The book has been published by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and is helping introduce readers across Australia to the rich storytelling traditions of the Torres Strait.

Through Geigi The Stubborn Boy, Elliot and Michael have not only created a children's book - they have created a lasting legacy that celebrates culture, family and the power of storytelling.

The book can be purchased from QBD Books!
