Rooted in Tradition, Renewed in Mission: Reflections from Our APRE Retreat

By Amanda Jones

The recent APRE retreat was a profoundly enriching experience, weaving together the mystical, wisdom, and sacramental traditions of our faith in a way that was both reflective and deeply engaging.
Our exploration of the mystical tradition brought us face to face with the lives of Teresa of Avila, Hildegard of Bingen, and Julian of Norwich—each offering a unique window into the depths of spiritual contemplation and divine encounter. The practice of icon writing proved to be a particularly meaningful experience, allowing participants to engage creatively with their faith, expressing prayer and devotion through artistic expression.

Moving into the wisdom tradition, we embraced creation as our teacher, spending time in nature to reflect on God’s presence in the world around us. These moments of solitude and reflection provided space for personal discernment, spiritual direction and reconnecting us with the sacred wisdom that flows through both scripture and the natural world. The use of storytelling as a means of exploring life and faith added a personal and communal dimension, reinforcing the idea that wisdom is found not only in sacred texts but also in the experiences that shape our lives.

The retreat culminated in an immersion into the sacramental tradition, where we participated in Mass, explored the themes of wisdom and grace, and shared a meal prepared by the group—a tangible expression of the Eucharistic call to community and nourishment. Overall, the retreat was a beautifully crafted experience, providing participants with spiritual depth, creative engagement, and moments of profound reflection. The integration of mysticism, wisdom, and sacramental life created a rich tapestry of faith exploration, leaving
us renewed and inspired as we continue our work in our schools.
